Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How often should my trees and shrubs be professionally pruned in Denver?
Most shrubs should be pruned yearly. The timing for trees depends on their size. Mature trees should be pruned every 5 to 7 years while smaller trees may require light maintenance pruning or shaping every 1 to 3 years. What are the signs that my tree may be hazardous or needs to be removed?
Your tree may need to be removed if it is leaning or heaving – meaning the tree looks like it is being pushed out of the ground. Heaving is common in Denver due to our freeze-thaw cycle, which leads to soil expansion. Other signs of tree distress may include cracks, broken branches or if the tree has 60% or more deadwood. Our Certified Arborists can assess your tree for tree risk and tree risk assessments and let you know if the condition requires a full removal. What’s the difference between tree pruning and tree trimming?
Often these terms mean the same thing. Pruning is sometimes used to describe removing small tree branches for aesthetic or shaping reasons. Trimming is used to explain cutting back large branches to protect a home’s roofline or aid with visibility. How do I know whether I need stump removal or stump grinding?
Our Certified Arborists can help guide you based on your goals and your yard. Stump grinding uses a machine while stump removal is typically done by hand. When is the best time of year for tree spraying and disease treatments in Colorado?
It depends on the insects that are affecting your trees. Our Certified Arborists will be able to recommend the best treatments and application timing based on the species in your yard. What common pests or diseases affect trees in the Denver area?
Denver is a semi-arid desert climate. While this means we do not have as many pests or arbor diseases as other states, we still have to contend with a few. For example, Crabapples can get fire blight, and Oak trees can get Oak leaf blister. Most of the insects in our area are “host-specific” – meaning they only live on certain types of trees. Our Certified Arborists can help you determine if the trees in your yard would benefit from preventative pest treatments or disease maintenance.Do my trees need deep-root fertilization, and how can it help them in our climate?
Your trees may benefit from deep root fertilization if they are stressed or trying to become established. Deep root fertilization helps the tree build up its nutrient reserves so that it can grow a nice, full set of leaves and stay healthy for years to come. How does your team ensure safety during tree removals and pruning?
All of our team members are thoroughly trained in safety measures related to tree removals and pruning. This includes wearing personal protective gear and controlling traffic to any areas where tree removals are taking place. In addition, our team members are CPR certified. All of our gear is inspected regularly. We are licensed and insured and have all required certifications. Can storm-damaged trees be saved, or do they need to be removed?
It often depends on the damage. Trees typically need at least 60% or more of their canopy to survive. We offer emergency tree care and can help you assess your options. How do I know if my tree is suffering from drought stress or winter damage?
A tree is drought stressed or has winter damage when its leaves or needles turn brown or start to fall off the tree prematurely. Because Denver is a semi-arid climate, drought stress is often the cause. The best way to combat this is to make sure your trees get watered over the winter. We recommend watering trees once a month if we do not get at least 1-inch of natural precipitation which equates to 12-inches of snow.
